Facebook's messaging platform, WhatsApp, no longer runs on versions older than Android 2.3.7 and earlier than iOS 8. As older operating systems no longer receive security updates, WhatsApp recommends using devices with the latest operating systems.

According to the firm, Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread's usage rate is only 0.3 percent among all Android-powered devices. The majority of users of this version, which came out about 10 years ago, live in Asia and Africa.
